With a long list of Fortune 100 clients, Sullivan & Cromwell litigator Sharon Nelles has blazed a path through the old boys club of securities litigation, as well as guiding companies through high-stakes class action and government cases.

This week, she’ll be in federal court in San Francisco as U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer holds a final fairness hearing on Volkswagen’s $14.7 billion settlement with owners of nearly 500,000 diesel cars. Nelles and Sullivan & Cromwell partner Robert Giuffra Jr. have been lead counsel for the German auto maker in the case, which began when the EPA last fall said VW used software to cheat emissions tests.
