The bond between Briggs and Morgan and Xcel Energy Inc. extends beyond the usual firm-client relationship. Litigation partner Eric Rucker’s connection with the electric and natural gas company includes a sharp focus on diversity initiatives.

Both entities are members of the Twin Cities Diversity in Practice nonprofit, which promotes a range of programs aimed at boosting minority attorneys in the region. Xcel has also been an active proponent of increasing diversity among its outside counsel, Rucker said. For example, the firm and Xcel started collaborating on the Twin Cities Diversity in Practice internship program for first-year law students in 2011, Rucker said. Since then, the firm and the company have shared interns so that they get exposure to working at the energy giant, which had $11.7 billion in revenues last year, and to the midsize law firm. Briggs and Morgan has 152 lawyers, according to latest NLJ 350, The National Law Journal’s annual survey of the nation’s 350 largest law firms.Ultimately, the program also helps both sides recruit and retain diverse attorneys, Rucker said.
