Morgan, Lewis & Bockius’ managing partners in Washington were up by 5 a.m. last Wednesday, trading emails to make sure none of their colleagues had been hurt in the Amtrak crash in Phila­delphia the night before. By about 7 a.m., Grace Speights and Elizabeth Baird knew none of their partners had booked tickets through the firm’s travel service, Baird said.

Several lawyers last week said they and their firms rely on frequent train travel between New York and Wash­ington — most often, the Acela express. Yet the May 12 derailment of Amtrak’s Northeast regional train that killed eight people and injured hundreds more left the Washington legal community largely unscathed.
