One of the world’s largest hotel chains has filed suit against a man it says exploited a flaw in its online reservations system to the tune of $48,500. Robert Chat of St. Petersburg, Florida, allegedly discovered that Choice Hotels International’s online booking system didn’t erase his rewards points when he canceled a reservation. He continued to make and cancel hundreds of reservations over three months, redeeming thousands of dollars in gift cards earned as part of the rewards program. Rewards are offered to customers “for actually staying at Choice Hotels, not simply for making a reservation,” the lawsuit said. Chat told the Tampa Bay Times that he legally obtained only 10 percent of the rewards amount in question and that he is seeking representation. “I’m not even computer literate,” he said. — Richard Binder
