Republican lawmakers in North Carolina have once again set their sights on the University of North Carolina School of Law.

State Sen. Tom Apodaca, a Republican, introduced a late amendment to the state budget last week that would cut $3 million from the law school in Chapel Hill—more than 10 percent of its proposed $27.2 budget for next fiscal year. The Senate passed the amendment by a 30-19 vote, and the proposed budget is now before the state House of Representatives.

“We are disappointed and surprised with the Senate's proposal to reduce funding to the University of North Carolina School of Law,” university chancellor Carol Folt said in a written statement. “Our incoming dean, Martin Brinkley, and I will continue to meet with state lawmakers to underscore the importance of state support in maintaining a premier law school that provides great value to our state.”
