The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decisions on same-sex marriage and health care served as the catalysts for a Republican presidential candidate’s Senate hearing Wednesday on retention elections, term limits and other means to rein in what he labeled the justices’ “lawlessness.”
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on oversight, agency action, federal rights and federal courts, voiced “great disappointment” at the high court’s decisions in the term just ended. The court, he charged, “crossed a line” and continued “its long descent into lawlessness to a level, I believe, that demands action.”
