The former chief judge of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board is coming clean. James Smith has joined Ecolab Inc., a Fortune 500 chemical company that promotes sanitation in everything from hospitals to drinking water to farm animals. The Minnesota-based company numbers some 47,000 employees and reported sales of $14 billion last year.

Smith will serve as Ecolab’s chief intellectual property counsel for law and regulatory affairs. The news was made public on Nov. 17 by Smith’s former PTAB colleague Scott Kamholz on Foley Hoag’s PTAB Blog.
