In June 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court vacated the 2015 conviction of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell for bribery and other crimes.

The high court's decision in one of the most widely followed white-collar crime cases of the year capped nearly three years of litigation by Jones Day's white-collar team.

After the Fourth Circuit affirmed McDonnell's corruption convictions, Jones Day obtained a stay of the decision from the Supreme Court so that McDonnell could remain free on bail pending high court review. In January 2016, McDonnell obtained certiorari on the question of what constitutes “official action” under federal corruption laws. On June 27, 2016, the Supreme Court unanimously vacated his convictions.
