Three lawyers representing ex-Trump campaign aide Rick Gates filed a motion Thursday to withdraw from his case.

The lawyers include Shanlon Wu of Wu, Grohovsky & Whipple; Walter Mack of Doar Rieck Kaley & Mack; and Annemarie McAvoy of McAvoy Consulting. Their motion to U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the District of Columbia did not outline a reason for their withdrawal. It said the reasons will be set forth in a motion filed under seal.

In an email, Wu declined to comment, citing an order from the judge barring the parties and their lawyers from communicating with the press about issues material to the case.

A spokesman for Mack said the lawyer had no comment and McAvoy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Press reports last week said veteran white-collar lawyer Tom Green of Sidley Austin had joined Gates' legal team, suggesting a plea deal could be in the works. Green did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

As a result of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller, Gates and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort were indicted last year on 12 counts, including money laundering and violations of foreign lobbying disclosure requirements. Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The charges stem from Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible links to President Donald Trump's campaign.
