Still frame from Associated Press video that shows 2014 Utah federal courthouse shooting.

A video released Monday shows the fatal shooting by a U.S. marshal of a defendant who rushed a witness stand at a Utah federal courthouse.

In the video from the 2014 trial, defendant Siale Angilau can be seen standing from his chair, taking a pen from his defense counsel's table, sprinting and lunging toward the witness, who narrowly ducked out of the way before a U.S. marshal shot four times, striking Angilau.

The video was released after a media coalition, including The Associated Press, argued for its release as an important record in a police use-of-force case, according to the AP.

Angilau, then age 25, was facing gang-related federal racketeering charges. He was the last of several alleged members of the Tongan Crips gang to be charged, according to earlier reporting by the National Law Journal. Prosecutors confirmed that the unidentified witness was previously a member of the Tongan Crips.

The judge in the case declared a mistrial, and the U.S. marshal was later cleared of any wrongdoing.
