Methodology: The Women's Scorecard is produced as part of the annual NLJ 500 firm head count report. Data on gender diversity at firms is collected at the same time as when firms report financial numbers and head counts to ALM. Only the largest 350 firms are eligible for the Women's Scorecard. Diversity staffing counts are based on a firm's average FTE attorneys in 2017. Partner statistics include both equity and nonequity partners. Nonpartner or “other” figures include special counsel, of counsel, and other staff attorneys. We do not include contract or temporary attorneys. The data in this survey is self-reported and previously unpublished. Not all firms in the NLJ 500 provide gender statistics to ALM. Some firms cannot count gender in average FTE terms, which explains why they may be missing from this scorecard. The Women in Law Score is determined by adding the percentage of female attorneys and percentage of female partners. In the case of a tie, the higher rank is awarded to the firm with more proportionate female equity partners.
