On the final day of his confirmation hearings, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh received a friendly endorsement from Kirkland & Ellis partner Paul Clement.
“I believe he is enormously qualified to serve on the nation's highest court and I know he will serve with distinction,” Clement told the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The praise is little surprise coming from Clement, a former U.S. solicitor general and one of the nation's top appellate advocates. The men met while clerking on the U.S. Supreme Court for Republican-appointed justices in 1993 and have stayed friends.
On this week's Legal Speak podcast, Clement speaks with Law.com Supreme Court correspondent Marcia Coyle about Kavanaugh's nomination. (Their interview was recorded before allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh were made public.) Clement explains where he sees Kavanaugh fitting in on the current court and how that may change the strategy of lawyers who argue cases there. He also previews some of the big cases in the upcoming term.
