Greenberg Traurig said Tuesday that John Scalia, son of late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, has rejoined the firm as a shareholder in its Northern Virginia office and as a member of its global labor and employment practice.

Scalia spent 12 years at Greenberg Traurig before leaving to become a shareholder at Littler Mendelson in 2013. Two years later he moved to Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, where he was senior counsel. His practice involves representing employers, including in arbitration and mediation proceedings, in federal and state courts, and before federal and state agencies.

Scalia said in a statement Tuesday he was “delighted” to be headed back to his former firm.

“Greenberg Traurig does not simply maintain a labor and employment practice, but has been able to grow this practice strategically, delivering client value in a uniquely nimble, efficient, and collaborative manner,” he said. “The firm's talent, resources and history of empowerment will serve my clients well. In turn, I look forward to working closely with clients from throughout the firm.”

Naomi Beer, James Boudreau, and David Long-Daniels, co-chairs of the global labor and employment practice, said in a statement that Scalia's addition marked an exciting time for the firm. The trio touted Scalia's decades of experience and said his expertise was reflective of the quality of talent in their practice.

John Scalia is far from the only one carrying on the Scalia family legacy in the legal profession, particularly in the Washington area.

Eugene Scalia, John's brother, is a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in D.C., a co-chair of the firm's administrative law and regulatory practice group, and a former co-chair of its labor and employment practice. The Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University, based in Arlington, Virginia, features two Supreme Court Justices, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, teaching courses this upcoming summer to students abroad.

Christopher Scalia, another brother, works at CRC Public Relations in Alexandria, Virginia, and is author of “Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law, Faith, and Life Well Lived.”

Greenberg Traurig separately announced another D.C.-area hire on Tuesday: Dominic Draye, who was previously state solicitor general for Arizona, is joining the firm as a shareholder in Phoenix and Washington. A former Kirkland & Ellis litigator, Draye made news outside Arizona during his tenure as SG for helping to spearhead state actions challenging federal rulemaking, such as Obama-era ozone-related pollution limits.
