What was the most valuable lesson you learned in your first year of practice?  Don't be afraid to fail. Most attorneys are perfectionists and risk-averse, and the fear of falling short can be difficult. I encourage first-years to step out of their comfort zone as much as possible. Ask for challenging assignments, take ownership of your career. I still remind myself to do the same!

Describe your biggest win or accomplishment in practice.  Being a leader of the Simpson Thacher team that closed Carlyle Partners VII, an $18.5 billion fund—the largest private equity fund raised in 2018. I am also very proud to have helped Carlyle in establishing its recent real estate and technology funds.

Who do you consider to be your greatest lawyer mentor?  [Simpson Thacher partner] Barrie Covit. Not only is he a fantastic lawyer, he is a wonderful friend and partner. I seek to emulate his analytical—yet practical—approach to legal problems. Barrie has taught me the importance of remaining commercial.

Please share a key to your success.  I believe lawyers, or professionals in any service business, need networks within their firms and industry to succeed. I have been fortunate to practice with wonderful colleagues and friends who have supported me throughout my career. These relationships are a key to my success and have made the journey much more rewarding.
