Employer: Sidley Austin
Title and Practice Area: Partner, Food and Drug Law

What was the most valuable lesson you learned in your first year practicing law? I learned the importance of being proactive and reliable—don't be afraid to ask questions, stay organized and keep people updated. Never pass on an opportunity, especially those others decline. Take work seriously and own the entire matter, not just the part you've been assigned.

Describe your biggest win or accomplishment in practice. In both government and private practice, I helped clients understand and navigate complex regulatory frameworks to achieve goals. What I'm most proud of is that along the way I charted my own path and built rewarding relationships and areas of expertise.

Who is your greatest lawyer mentor and what has he or she taught you? The one that stands out is Ann Wion, who served for many years as a deputy chief counsel in FDA's Office of Chief Counsel, which is where I began practicing food and drug law. Ann taught me the importance of integrity and persistence, having a strong work ethic, and finding joy in what you do.

Please share a brief key to your success. Be prepared, genuine and dependable. I've found that success is built on trust and credibility, and to earn this you've got to understand issues and underlying motivations of each side, do the work and not cut corners, and be straightforward and reliable.
