Former Congressman Jim Moran, D-Virginia, has joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Washington, D.C., office from McDermott Will & Emery.
Moran, who is not a lawyer, was a senior legislative adviser at McDermott, and when he joined the firm in 2015 he was the only former member of Congress there. Nelson Mullins announced news of his move on Friday.
"We welcome Jim to our team and look forward to sharing his experience with our clients," said Jim Lehman, managing partner at Nelson Mullins, in a statement. "His experience at the state and federal levels will certainly enhance our services to clients in many areas."
As a public official, Moran's constituents resided in Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax County, Virginia, in the D.C. suburbs. Moran was also a former mayor of Alexandria.
Across his 12 terms in Congress, Moran was a member of the House Committees on Foreign Affairs, Banking, Housing, Finance, and the Government Reform and Oversight Committee. He was also a member of the steering committee for the House Democratic Leadership, but when he joined McDermott in 2015 he told The National Law Journal that he had "as many close relationships with Republicans as I do with Democrats."
Moran has deep roots in Washington that extend beyond politics. He is the son of Jim Moran Sr., a former NFL offensive lineman with the Boston Redskins, which would later become D.C.'s primary professional football franchise.
