Tell us about your biggest client wins this year. A $68 million verdict in which the plaintiffs uncovered that a heart surgeon knowingly left the surgery early to attend a business meeting and refused to return as the situation deteriorated, resulting in the patient suffering a devastating brain injury. Heimberg Barr is particularly proud of this victory; not only did [the firm] surpass by more than three times the previous record in California history for a medical malpractice verdict, but also, [it was] able to uncover and stop a system that allowed the surgeon to cause severe harm.

What's the best lesson you learned as a young lawyer? Although intellectual preparation is necessary, passion for the case and caring deeply about your clients is critical to victory.

What's been the most significant change in your practice area and how have you adjusted? The enormous restrictions on plaintiffs by the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act. Steven Heimberg has spent a career carving exceptions to and limiting the application of this law.
