Silicon Valley-based Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, which has been focused on growth in the nation's capital, has now hired longtime O'Melveny & Myers partner Kenneth O'Rourke to bolster its antitrust litigation practice.
O'Rourke is the sixth partner Wilson Sonsini has added to its Washington, D.C., office this year. He previously practiced in California, and plans to split his time between Washington and the West Coast.
"Wilson Sonsini is a leader in working with new-age companies, as well as longtime established companies," O'Rourke said. "They just have a really strong antitrust team working with these companies, and I'm here to help expand the litigation for antitrust."
O'Rourke litigates complex cases and high-stakes U.S. and international disputes, with a focus on antitrust issues. He spent nearly 35 years at O'Melveny & Myers.
He joined O'Melveny's Los Angeles office as an associate in 1985, and became a partner at the firm in 1994. O'Rourke moved to O'Melveny's Washington office in early 2018 while he was working on AT&T and Time Warner's case against the U.S. Department of Justice over attempts to block their merger.
He said being in Washington allows him to be "closer to the government enforcers, the Department of Justice and the FTC, as well as litigation on the East Coast."
"The antitrust investigations and antitrust litigation have evolved from being local controversies to national controversies, nationwide controversies and, increasingly, international controversies," O'Rourke said, adding that his experience working on both coasts and in other countries will enhance Wilson Sonsini's "ability to service large-scale antitrust disputes in any jurisdiction."
Including the six partners it has added this year, Wilson Sonsini's Washington office has a total head count of about 110 attorneys. In addition to O'Rourke, the firm added partner Steffen Johnson, co-leader of Winston & Strawn's appellate practice, in September; Tarek Helou from the U.S. Department of Justice in August; Georgia Ravitz and James Ravitz from Arent Fox in April; and former Richards Kibbe & Orbe partner Jeffrey Lehtman in February.
"Ken is an accomplished first-chair attorney who is valued for his talents as a litigator and his skills as an adviser," said Wilson Sonsini managing partner Doug Clark in a statement. "For an antitrust practice like ours that is constantly engaged in important cases and confronting important issues, we are looking forward to Ken's contributions toward the work we do on behalf of clients."
Reached for comment Wednesday, a spokesperson for O'Melveny said: "We thank Ken for his service to our firm and our clients, and wish him all the best."
