President Donald Trump is bringing on private lawyers, including Kenneth Starr and Alan Dershowitz, to his legal team to defend him as his impeachment trial is set to begin next week in the U.S. Senate.
Starr, a former U.S. appeals court judge, and Dershowitz, a Harvard Law School professor emeritus, have defended Trump in numerous appearances on Fox News. Trump is also adding Robert Ray, a former federal prosecutor who succeeded Starr as independent counsel, according to a source connected to Trump's legal team. Starr recently called Trump's impeachment a "very ugly chapter in our constitutional history."
Dershowitz on Friday said on Twitter that he will present oral arguments on the constitutional grounds against impeachment. Proceedings are set to begin Tuesday afternoon. On Thursday, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. delivered the oath to U.S. senators requiring them to render "impartial justice."
"While Professor Dershowitz is non partisan when it comes to the constitution—he opposed the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and voted for Hillary Clinton—he believes the issues at stake go to the heart of our enduring Constitution," Dershowitz said on Twitter.
The Trump legal team will also include former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who joined the White House recently to help on impeachment "messaging."
Politico also reported that Jane Raskin, a personal lawyer to Trump, will join the legal team. Raskin works with her husband at Raskin & Raskin in Coral Gables.
White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and Jay Sekulow, a private lawyer for Trump, are leading the impeachment defense. Cipollone is still expected to speak at the impeachment trial next week.
The House voted last month to impeach Trump on charges of obstruction of Congress and abuse of power. The trial will focus on Trump's effort to get the president of Ukraine to announce investigations of political rival Joe Biden. The Trump administration withheld hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine as Trump and allies pressured Ukraine to meddle in U.S. political affairs.
Trump's lawyers will face a team from the House led by Rep. Adam Schiff, a former federal prosecutor. The team also includes Reps. Jerry Nadler, Zoe Lofgren, Hakeem Jeffries, Jason Crow, Sylvia Garcia and Val Demings.
