The Senate voted largely along party lines Wednesday to acquit President Donald Trump on articles of impeachment for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, closing the book on the months-long impeachment inquiry that has dominated both chambers of Congress.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, broke with Republicans to vote to convict Trump for abuse of power, making him the first senator to ever vote to convict a president from his own party in an impeachment trial. However, he voted to acquit the president on the obstruction article.

"I believe that attempting to corrupt an election to maintain power is about as egregious an assault on the Constitution as can be made," Romney said during an emotional speech Wednesday on the Senate floor. "And for that reason, it is a high crime and misdemeanor and I have no choice under the oath that I took but to express that conclusion."
