U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, the Democratic minority leader, on Thursday expressed regret over his warning that two conservative Supreme Court justices would “pay the price” for any anti-abortion rulings, public remarks that drew a rare statement from Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. admonishing the lawmaker for “threatening” and “dangerous” rhetoric.

Speaking on the Senate floor Thursday, Schumer said: “Now, I should not have used the words I used yesterday. They didn’t come out the way I intended to. My point was that there would be political consequences—political consequences—for President Trump and Senate Republicans if the Supreme Court, with the newly confirmed justices, stripped away a woman’s right to choose.” Schumer continued: “But in no way was I making a threat. I never, never would do such a thing.”
