Lawyers across America need to say these words clearly and loudly: “Democracy in America has been under attack. Our system of free and fair elections is being delegitimized. And our national security is at heightened risk because the current administration refuses to facilitate an orderly transition of power.”

Our country is at particular peril if its lawyers fail to recognize their unique role in protecting democracy. All attorneys, upon their admission to the bar, take an oath to support the Constitution of the United States. Most state and national bar associations have mission statements that include a commitment to the justice system; some speak of defending liberty and others of fulfilling obligations to the courts and the public.
