Close to 8,000 attorneys have signed on to letters from two lawyers' groups calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office in the wake of Wednesday's mob attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Lawyers Defending American Democracy and the Lawyers for Good Government are both calling on lawmakers to immediately begin impeachment proceedings and for the president's cabinet to take action under the 25th Amendment to ensure that Trump does not complete his term in office.

"The president's words and actions are profoundly damaging and represent an immediate threat to our republic and the rule of law," said Lawyers for Good Government's president Traci Feit Love said in a statement. "Those given the power to respond by our Constitution have a duty to take action immediately, using the full force of their office to protect the United States of America from a president who has incited a violent attack on the Capitol."

Her group, which was founded following the 2016 election, touts nearly 7,000 attorney signers, in all 50 states, along with an additional 5,000+ names who aren't lawyers. The names on the list have been kept private, citing security concerns.

Lawyers Defending American Democracy is of even more recent vintage, having been founded in 2019. The group's letter asks members of the legal profession to join the nearly 1,400 signees in expressing outrage over what Trump and others have done to undermine the U.S. system of government.

"We call upon them to speak out and use their influence with their peers in their law firms, law schools and professional associations to condemn in the strongest possible terms the perpetrators of these crimes," the letter said. "Members of our profession must be brave and outspoken and resist whatever intimidation may come their way."

The nearly 1,400 names on the list include former managing partners at Ropes & Gray and Foley Hoag; former or retired partners of Covington & Burling, Proskauer Rose, Selendy & Gay, Fenwick & West and Goodwin Procter; current partners at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner; Holland & Knight, Snell & Wilmer; Keker, Van Nest & Peters; and Choate Hill & Stewart; former federal judges in Massachusetts and Los Angeles, and former American Bar Association president Michael Greco.

On Thursday, the management board at Crowell & Moring issued a statement calling for Trump's immediate removal, and chairman Philip Inglima said he would be contacting other law firm leaders asking them to join the effort. At least one firm, New York mid-sized firm Phillips Nizer, has heeded the call, releasing its own statement labeling the president unfit for office.
