The federal prosecutor’s office in Washington has established a strike force to explore sedition charges linked to the “most heinous acts” carried out during the deadly rioting at the U.S. Capitol last week, a top Justice Department official said Tuesday, describing the breadth of the ongoing investigation as unprecedented.

Michael Sherwin, who was named in May as the acting U.S. attorney in Washington, said the strike force includes some of the most senior national security and public corruption prosecutors in the office, the largest of the more than 90 U.S. attorney’s offices nationwide.
