A former in-house attorney who was fired from his job after he posted on social media about being outside the U.S. Capitol the day a violent mob stormed the building has filed a spurious lawsuit seeking to permanently ban the members of the new Congress from holding federal office.

The complaint, filed Monday in the Western District of Texas, is unlikely to succeed, as it asks a federal judge to unilaterally bar the entire Congress from fulfilling their duties, alleging that changes in states' election laws ahead of the 2020 vote were illegal. It was filed by Paul Davis, a former associate general counsel at Goosehead Insurance, who was fired after social media posts indicated he was at the Capitol on Jan. 6. It does not appear he stormed the building himself.
