A former FBI lawyer avoided prison time Friday after pleading guilty to doctoring an email that federal authorities relied on during the Russia investigation to renew surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, as a federal judge sentenced him to a year of probation.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg of the District of Columbia said he believed the former FBI lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith, did not knowingly insert an inaccuracy into the email to mislead a secretive surveillance court as it considered extending the surveillance of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
