Last year, Jeffrey Wall, then the acting U.S. solicitor general, defended the Trump administration's race to the Supreme Court. "I don't think anybody is defending the current state of affairs as a good or stable one," Wall said. "But we have faced an unprecedented situation in the lower courts and we have felt compelled to respond in an unprecedented way."
