When Merrick Garland is sworn in as attorney general, it will serve as a capstone on a career that has spanned years at the Justice Department and decades as a federal appellate court judge.

Garland, confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday in a bipartisan 70-30 vote, touched upon those multiple roles throughout his nomination process and promised to uphold the values he’s learned while leading the Justice Department.
