A nearly 50-year-old U.S. Supreme Court decision creating a particular warrant exception to car searches vexed the justices Wednesday on whether it should be extended to modern-day crises involving searches of the home.

In the case Caniglia v. Strom, the justices heard 90 minutes of arguments—more than the allotted 60 minutes—and a blizzard of hypotheticals that law enforcement officers might face in home situations. The case arrived from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
