Gordon Sondland, who retained lawyers at Paul Hastings and Portland firm Ball Janik to advise him as a witness during former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment, says he spent about $1.8 million on legal fees during the saga and either the U.S. government or Mike Pompeo should repay him.

Sondland filed suit Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against Pompeo individually, and the U.S. government, claiming breach of contract and intentional misrepresentation. Sondland’s suit is also asking the court to award punitive damages.
