Texas lawmakers have brought nearly all abortion in the state to a halt for the first time since 1973. This fall the Supreme Court might either overturn Roe v. Wade outright or significantly reduce abortion rights. Our other branches of government should step up decisively to provide the checks and balances needed to defend reproductive freedom.

With some bold legal maneuvering, Texas lawmakers ground nearly all abortion to a halt this month for the first time since 1973. The Texas law bans all abortion after approximately six weeks and is enforceable by any vigilante with an anti-abortion agenda. The Supreme Court failed to act, tacitly green-lighting other states to act like legislative cowboys by adopting similar laws. Now the Justice Department has stepped up to reign in this Texas-sized assault on our reproductive freedoms.
