Senate Democrat Mazie Hirono on Wednesday suggested her Republican colleagues were being hypocritical for attacking several judicial nominees, including a public defender, over past arguments made on behalf of clients.

Hirono’s comment came at the end of a confirmation hearing for four of President Joe Biden’s federal court picks, including Charles Esque Fleming for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Republicans peppered Fleming, a longtime federal public defender, with questions about arguments he made on behalf of clients convicted of child pornography and drug crimes.
