The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Texas on Monday, alleging the state’s redistricting plans impede the voting power of Latino and Black voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

The lawsuit, announced by Attorney General Merrick Garland and Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta at a news conference, alleges that Texas’ redrawn maps for congressional and state legislative districts disregard the growth of minority populations in the state, especially Latinos.
