Attorney General Merrick Garland defended the Justice Department’s approach to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and vowed in a speech on Wednesday to bring charges against perpetrators “at any level” who were criminally responsible for the violence.

Speaking at Main Justice on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the riot, Garland said that those who stormed the Capitol, overran police officers and forced lawmakers to flee interfered with a “fundamental right of American democracy, the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next.”
