In a brief, 40-minute hearing Tuesday, the Hague-based International Court of Justice ordered the Russian Federation to immediately suspend its military operation in Ukraine.

Ukraine initiated legal proceedings before the International Court of Justice, the United Nations’ highest court, two days after Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24, arguing that Moscow’s stated justification—that it was acting to prevent a genocide in eastern Ukraine—was unfounded. It also asked the court to order Russia to immediately cease its military operations in Ukraine.
