A Texas man accused of taking part in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol pleaded guilty on Thursday to a single-count indictment after the U.S. Justice Department’s botched handling of the case led prosecutors to drop multiple felony counts against him.

Lucas Denney was initially charged in an eight-count criminal complaint with offenses including assaulting police officers, obstruction of an official proceeding and acts of physical violence in the Capitol building. Denny wound up pleading guilty to a single charge of assaulting police, without striking a plea deal with the government, attempting to take advantage of a mistake by prosecutors assigned to the case who blew past a 30-day deadline to indict him.
