The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has picked a new federal public defender for the Western District of North Carolina, replacing the man named in a sex discrimination lawsuit against the judiciary that was recently spotlighted in a congressional hearing.

The court on Monday announced it selected John Baker, who retired in December 2021 as a brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is replacing Anthony Martinez, who was named to the position in 2017 and had thrown his hat into the ring to be reappointed to another four-year term.
