The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday dodged a key issue in a Medicare case that businesses and others hoped would begin to scale back the power of the federal regulatory state.

A number of groups and scholars had urged the justices to use the case, American Hospital Association v. Becerra, to cut back or overturn so-called Chevron deference. And, some justices in earlier cases and during case arguments in November, seemed interested in doing so.
