The U.S. Justice Department began its counteroffensive against abortion restrictions on Tuesday with a lawsuit challenging an Idaho law that bans the procedure in nearly all situations.
The suit, filed in Idaho federal court, alleges the state law conflicts with a federal statute, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, known as EMTALA requiring hospitals that accept federal funding to treat and stabilize all patients that seek medical care.
