News that FBI agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in an investigation targeting former President Donald Trump quickly lit up social media as lawyers discussed the legal and political implications.

While Trump called the search on Monday a “siege,” noting agents also gained access to a safe, many lawyers were quick to point out the warrant would have gone through FBI Director Christopher Wray, a Trump appointee, and gotten approval from a magistrate judge who would have to find probable cause for the search. Critics, though, accused the Biden administration of misusing the Justice Department to go after a political rival who is expected to be a leading contender for the Republican nomination heading into the 2024 presidential election.
