"Its eleventh-hour timing and surrounding circumstances strongly suggest that [defendant John H.] Strand seeks reassignment because he and [co-defendant Dr. Simone] Gold were unhappy with her sentence, and he would thus prefer another judge to conduct the remainder of his proceedings," U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper of the District of Columbia said. "The court will not reward any such tactic."

Months after sentencing his former law school classmate for her involvement in the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol, U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper of the District of Columbia has declined to step down from her co-defendant's case following the delayed disclosure of allegedly more extensive social interactions with the judge nearly 30 years ago.
Dr. Simone Gold and John H. Strand were criminally charged for their presence in the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. When Gold was arraigned in February 2021, Cooper publicly disclosed that he and Gold attended Stanford Law School in the early 1990s, according to his order filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
