Depending on who you asked, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals either saved over 50 years of consumer protection law or hogtied internet service providers facing civil disputes Friday.

The case involved an allegedly inaccurate background check acquired by a prospective employer from The Source of Public Data, an online background checker and data broker, as well as the source of the plaintiff’s background data, ShadowSoft Inc.; HarlingtonStraker Studio Inc. and Dale Bruce Stringfellow.
