The newly available papers of Justice John Paul Stevens shed light on how the U.S. Supreme Court decided one of the most significant cases of his nearly 35-year tenure. 

That 2003 decision, Grutter v. Bollinger, upheld the use of racial preferences in university admissions, a ruling now on the chopping block in a pair of pending cases involving Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.
