Two hundred and twenty-seven firms, up from 224 in 2022, reported the number of out associates, partners and other attorneys in 2023. Chicago-based Jenner & Block once again took the top slot with just over 12% of its legal employees self-reporting on the LGBTQ spectrum. Jenner D.C. office managing partner Lindsay Harrison said LGBTQ issues have been part of the firm's fabric since its high-profile win at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas.
"We had multiple gay partners at the time, and it was still illegal for LGBTQ people to have sexual relations in about 13 states," Harrison said of the legal fight, led by Lambda Legal's then-Legal Director Ruth Harlow, to end such prohibitions.
