U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit Judge David Tatel will join Hogan Lovells as senior counsel after retiring from the bench in September, the firm announced Wednesday.

Tatel, 81, was appointed to the federal appeals court in 1994 by President Bill Clinton to fill a seat left vacant by Ruth Bader Ginsburg when she joined the U.S. Supreme Court. Before joining the bench, Tatel was a partner at Hogan & Hartson, which became Hogan Lovells in a 2010 merger. While there, he founded the firm’s education practice.
