The U.S. Supreme Court appeared to lean in favor Wednesday of upholding a Republican-drawn South Carolina congressional district that a lower court said was an unconstitutional “racial gerrymander.”

Over more than two hours of oral arguments, the high court’s conservative majority repeatedly questioned the evidence a three-judge panel used to conclude that GOP Rep. Nancy Mace’s congressional district was illegally drawn using racial data.
