By the slimmest of majorities, the U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed D.C. Court of Appeals Judge Loren AliKhan to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, making her the first South Asian woman on that court.

AliKhan, who previously served as solicitor general of the District of Columbia, faced a 50-50 vote in the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the tie to achieve confirmation. AliKhan’s cloture vote earlier in the day was the 32nd tie-breaking vote that Harris cast in the Senate, setting a vice presidential record.
