The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear San Francisco's challenge to what it calls the "vagueness" of an Environmental Protection Agency permit for wastewater discharge that the city says exposes it to significant liability for pollution under the federal Clean Water Act.
San Francisco is at loggerheads with the EPA over its rules surrounding discharges of raw sewage from the city's aging sewer system into the Pacific Ocean during heavy rains.
