A divided U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday refused to curb the availability of malicious prosecution lawsuits in cases where one of multiple criminal charges was justified, holding that courts must look to each charge individually to decide whether someone’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated.

The 6-3 decision was a victory for jeweler Jascha Chiaverini, who sued the city of Napoleon, Ohio, after spending three days in custody in connection with a police investigation into a stolen ring for which Chiaverini allegedly paid a petty thief $45. Chiaverini was released after his arraignment, but county prosecutors declined to pursue the case.
