The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected the government’s “sweeping” view of a federal obstruction statute wielded against Jan. 6 defendants in a ruling that could potentially affect hundreds of prosecutions, including that against former President Donald Trump.

In an unusual 6-3 lineup, the high court threw out a ruling against a former Pennsylvania police officer who joined hundreds of other Trump supporters who entered the seat of Congress after U.S. Capitol police officers were overwhelmed by a violent mob trying to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
